Kragujevac I Milošev Venac

Kragujevac is not the biggest city or the oldest, for us living here it's peaceful enough without the city noise most bigger cities have and still full of life on it's streets.

Decision made, now two centuries ago, by Miloš Obrenović for Kragujevac to become the capital of country has turn it from a small place into a town which then had a court complex of buildings and many cultural objects.

Still, then for people living here more important was the construction of "Knežev arsenal" one of the leaders of industrial revolution, like the factory of FIAT cars is today.

Downtown, with it's three walking plaza's, is full of coffee shops, open summer gardens, bakeries, confectioneries and restaurants working until one hour after midnight. Somewhat around that hour most of the night clubs open their doors in the popularly known "Main" street or Kralja Aleksandra Karađorđevića or near it. If you do enjoy a nice meal and the sound of old town music there are many tavern/kafana's (kafana - bistro) which people from Kragujevac visit after 21h. 1

Today, remaining buildings of that era located near each other on the both sides of the river Lepenica are called "Milošev venac". Only remaining building from the entire court complex today is so called Admidžin konak used as a small museum. Just beside it is the 1. Gymnasium and theater with it's name like so many other buildings bears the  name Knjaževsko-srpski teatar (Knyaz or knez is a historical Slavic title, used both as a royal and noble title).

On the other side of the river is the Old church again built by knez Miloš and the "Knežev arsenal" used today as a great location for many music festivals here just down town.
Like then everything was just within a reach, today most of everything is still down town even though other parts of town are slowly developing. You don't need more than an hour walk in any direction to get yourself anywhere.

You can see the pictures of the parts of the town I've mentioned as well as two handy maps, selfie spots included. :)

As you can see Kragujevac is a "younger" city, without any folc or romantic things to drive tourists to, but with more than enough site's to spend couple of hours while visiting.

Where are you from ? :)

Srpski:

  4. I've always wanted to go to Serbia, but I've never really seen much on Kragujevac. You're right; it might not be the most "romantic," but it's gorgeous. The architecture is really an interesting timeline. Thanks for all the interesting facts!
