Why Lie About Reading Books ?

I have just read an article published by National Geographic which says how 60% of people say how they have read certain books so they can seem smarter.
This is that list:

  • "1984" George Orvel
  • "War and peace" Lav Tolstoy
  • "Great expectations" Charles Dickens
  • " The catcher in the rye" J. D. Salinger
  • "A passage to India" E. M. Forster
  • "The Lord of the rings" J. R. R. Tolkien
  • "To kill a Mockingbird" Harper Lee
  • "Crime and punishment" Fyodor Dostoyevsky
  • "Pride and prejudice" Jane Ostin
  • 'Jane Eyre" Charlotte Bronte

What do you think ?

  1. Weird, isn't it? I love reading, but have only notched up three of those books because there are so many others to get through too. And I don't see how reading certain classics could make a person any smarter. People are strange!

  2. Haha this was funny because I have come across people who said they have read some books but couldn't name the author. However I am a big fan of classic books and have read and loved a few from that list, but not all.

  4. What a strange thing to do! I'd like to think I wouldn't judge someone's intelligence on whether they've read a certain book :)

  6. I read 3 of the books in high school. It is interesting how people lie about certain things. Some people seem to have the need to elevate their "status" and it goes hand in hand with what car they drive, what school they went to..etc...I find this an interesting topic.

    1. That is a completely another issue we could talk for a long time, but people are sometimes funny with the things they do to make themselves feel important. :)

  7. I don't understand this either! I don't recall ever lying, even though I knew I'd get some weird looks and people saying "OMG!! you haven't read that?!"
These books include the Chronicles of Narnia, the Lord of the Rings and up until very recently (although not a 'clever' book), Twilight.
